In present paper, we prove the monotonicity of two functions involving the gamma function Γ(x)\Gamma(x) and relating to the nn-dimensional volume of the unit ball Bn\mathbb{B}^n in Rn\mathbb{R}^n.Comment: 7 page

Singular Points of Reactive Distillation Systems

    No full text
For the conceptual design of countercurrently operated reactive distillation columns, fast methods are needed to estimate potential top and bottom products. The possible column bottom product composition can be determined from the stable singular points of a batch reactive reboiler. In a similar manner the top product composition can be obtained from the stable singular points of a batch reactive condenser. Geometrically, the singular points of both batch processes are located on a common potential singular point surface (PSPS) whose trajectory depends on the reaction stoichiometry and the phase equilibria. At the singular points, the PSPS intersects a reaction kinetic surface that is dependent on the reaction rate expression and the phase equilibrium of a reference component. Based on the singularity analysis, a single-feed reactive distillation column can be designed. Several hypothetical and real reaction systems are analyzed to illustrate the singularity analysis and the design procedure. Copyright © 1999–2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Topological quantum memory interfacing atomic and superconducting qubits

We propose a scheme to manipulate a topological spin qubit which is realized with cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, by introducing a quantum opto-electro-mechanical interface, we are able to first transfer a superconducting qubit state to an atomic qubit state and then to store it into the topological spin qubit. In this way, an efficient topological quantum memory could be constructed for the superconducting qubit. Therefore, we can consolidate the advantages of both the noise resistance of the topological qubits and the scalability of the superconducting qubits in this hybrid architecture.Comment: v2: Accepted for publication in Science China-Physics, Mechanics & Astronom

Implementing universal nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates with transmons

Geometric phases are well known to be noise-resilient in quantum evolutions/operations. Holonomic quantum gates provide us with a robust way towards universal quantum computation, as these quantum gates are actually induced by nonabelian geometric phases. Here we propose and elaborate how to efficiently implement universal nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates on simpler superconducting circuits, with a single transmon serving as a qubit. In our proposal, an arbitrary single-qubit holonomic gate can be realized in a single-loop scenario, by varying the amplitudes and phase difference of two microwave fields resonantly coupled to a transmon, while nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gates may be generated with a transmission-line resonator being simultaneously coupled to the two target transmons in an effective resonant way. Moreover, our scenario may readily be scaled up to a two-dimensional lattice configuration, which is able to support large scalable quantum computation, paving the way for practically implementing universal nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation with superconducting circuits.Comment: v3 Appendix added, v4 published version, v5 published version with correction

Real-time TaqMan polymerase chain reaction to quantify the effects of different sources of dietary starch on Bifidobacterium in the intestinal tract of piglets

Twenty-eight PIC male piglets (similar birth and parity, weaned at 21±1.5 days) were used to study the effect of the different sources of dietary starch on the number of Bifidobacteria in the digesta of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon. Pigs were randomly assigned to one of four diets formulated with corn starch, wheat starch, tapioca or pea starch. The determined ratio of amylose to amylopectin for these starches was 0.21, 0.24, 0.12 and 0.52, respectively based on the 16s rRNA sequences of maximum species of Bifidobacterium from GenBank to design the primers and probe. TaqMan polymerase chain reaction was developed to quantify the number of Bifidobacterium. We used this assay to detect genomic DNA of Bifidobacterium in the intestinal tract digesta of piglets, including duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and colon. Our results indicated that, developed new real-time quantitative PCR assays can be allowed for rapid, convenient, reproducible and steady quantification of the Bifidobacterium in the intestinal content of piglets. Additionally, the present study revealed that high amylose/amylopectin ratio of starches significantly enhanced the numbers of Bifidobacterium in all segments of intestine.Key words: Starch, Bifidobacterium, Taq-man polymerase chain reaction (PCR), weaned pigs

A P300-speller based on event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP)

A brain-computer interface (BCI) P300 speller is a novel technique that helps people spell words using the electroencephalography (EEG) without the involvement of muscle activities. However, only time domain ERP features (P300) are used for controlling of the BCI speller. In this paper, we investigated the time-frequency EEG features for the P300-based brain-computer interface speller. A signal preprocessing method integrated ensemble average, principal component analysis, and independent component analysis to remove noise and artifacts in the EEG data. A time-frequency analysis based on wavelet transform was carried out to extract event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) and inter-trial coherence (ITC) features. Results showed that the proposed signal processing method can effectively extract EEG time-frequency features in the P300 speller, suggesting that ERSP and ITC may be useful for improving the performance of BCI P300 speller. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
